Please note that that rankings such as rating and ease of use are subjective. If you do not agree with what I have written please let me know!

Memrise is a series of flashcard courses designed by the Memrise community to help users learn a language. It uses "mems" to help users form vivid sensory memories. These mems could be mnemonics, photos, sample sentences etc. What makes Memrise different is that it also offers audio pronunciations of the words and in many cases videos that feature people using the words or acting them out. Registered users of Memrise can download courses in a range of languages for offline access. |

Bitsboard is a flashcard app that tracks user progress by means of 25 built-in mini-games. Flashcard sets are organized into individual boards, which are organized by subject. Users can search public collections and use pre-created boards, or they can create and upload their own content. Each board is a flashcard set, and cards can feature text, images, and audio. Teachers can use the app to upload their own boards, and then share them with students. Several French boards are available in the app’s catalog; unfortunately, to access them requires a monthly or annual subscription or an upgrade to the PRO version. |

Futaba (Japanese for 'seedling') is a 4 player word recognition game. The game begins as images zoom into the playing area. The first player to match the word to the image scores a point. Win 3 rounds and players are awarded a seedling. It’s this element of competition that makes the game so popular. Only the full (paid) version is relevant to languages teaching as the free version does not allow teachers to create their own content. New games can be created by using either the built in camera, the camera roll or by copying images to iTunes or Dropbox. Future support is planned for iCloud. |
$4.49 The free version is not useful for teaching languages as it has limitations. |

The Futaba Classroom Games operates in the same way as the standard Futaba app. Where it differs is that it contains a lot of content organised by learning area, year level etc. If you are sharing iPads with a classroom teacher, this is the version I would recommend you purchase. You can organise your own sets of content so that students in your lesson only have access to these games and can record audio directly into the app. Check out this promotional video to give you a general idea of how the game works. |

SpellBoard lets users create custom lists of vocabulary, record audio, enter a phrase for the word, an image, antonyms and/or synonyms and notes.
The custom spelling lists can be used in a range of word games: Word Search, Word Scramble, Alphabetization, Word/Sentence Matching as well as Missing Letter puzzles. Users can share their quizzes with other SpellBoard users (via email, iCloud, Dropbox, AirDrop, Bluetooth or iTunes File Sharing) which means that only one student needs to enter the week’s spelling words and then share the list with other classmates. Additionally, SpellBoard allows for multiple student profiles so teachers can track the performance of any student across any number of quizzes. |
