iPad apps - French

To assist you with your selection, particularly when there is a choice of apps that appear to be similar, I have attempted to oganise the apps according to a number of categories. Please note that that rankings such as rating and ease of use are subjective. If you do not agree with what I have written please let me know! ​

 With the lite version of iTooch French foreign language (A2/B1) you get to trial some of the full program (78 chapters). The 1,700 activities are organised into grammar, conjugation, spelling and vocabulary with explanations and inbuilt support. The program is written entirely in French and so is probably more suited to year 10 onwards.

Watch 3 reports each week to hear the specific vocabulary used in televised news reports, and read their transcript to discover how they are used in context. Have fun with a selection of new words each week: anagrams, quiz, jumbled words, words to correct and more. Memorize the meaning and spelling of a rich and specific vocabulary easily using a entertaining approach (1 report and 6 games only in the lite version).

Duolingo  gives users the opportunity to translate real-world texts in the language they are learning and at an appropriate level. The activities start out with simple words and phrases. As users become more proficient, Duolingo gives them more challenging phrases. To help them track their progress, Duolingo awards points and virtual badges.

The Mindsnacks language learning app is available in a range of languages including French. Various games help learners review and boost their vocabulary knowledge. While the app is initially free, you need to upgrade in order to unlock all 50 of the levels. It currently needs to be updated for iOS 11.

It also includes My Photo Album, which allows you to create and add your own content. The words are pronounced in French and students are encouraged to repeat them.
The free version is very limited but gives you a taste. It costs $5.99 to unlock all content
